HOPE Program – FAQ

Students who are currently enrolled in an overseas university (undergraduate or graduate).

• Students who have already graduated before or during the program period are not eligible to apply.
• Students on a leave of absence during the semester but still within their enrollment period are eligible to apply.

You must upload:

1. Copy of Passport (or National ID card if you don’t have a passport)
2. Certificate of Enrollment (or Academic Transcript)

Document requirements:

• Issued within the past 6 months
• In English
• Clearly shows key info (name, university name, etc.)

Yes, you can join different semesters.

• For example, if you took the Fall program, you can also apply for the Spring program.
• For the Winter School, you can apply for both Session A and Session B.

However:

• Submit a separate application for each session.
• Do not create multiple email accounts under the same name to take more courses within a single session.

We appreciate your interest, but the HOPE Program is only open to students who are currently enrolled in a university, as it is part of our student exchange initiative.

Document Guidelines

① Passport / National ID Copy

• Must clearly show full name, date of birth, and identity details.
• Student ID cards are not accepted.

② Certificate of Enrollment / Academic Transcript

• Official document with school logo or stamp.
• In English and shows university name, your name, and enrollment status.
• PDF or JPG, issued within the last 6 months.

Common reasons:

• No document uploaded / file cannot be opened.
• Not in English / unofficial (no logo/letterhead; screenshot).
• Only admission/acceptance letter uploaded.
• Expected graduation date already passed (needs verification).

About 2 weeks (excluding holidays). Individual status inquiries are not available during the review.

The Hanyang Online Pre-Exchange (HOPE) Program is a tuition-free online learning opportunity for students currently enrolled at overseas universities to take short-term, credit-bearing online courses taught in English.

No. HOPE is tuition-free for both partner and non-partner university students.

Currently, six courses are offered:

• <Economics> Principles of Microeconomics
• <Business> Modern Society and Marketing
• <Korean Language> Korean for Beginners
• <K-Culture> From Oldboy to Squid Game: Navigating the Korean Cultural Wave

Course offerings may vary each semester.

Generally similar, but new courses are developed each year. Check the current semester’s list before applying.

Up to two courses per session (maximum 6 credits).

100% online, asynchronous (pre-recorded) classes taught in English.

Yes—usually mid-term and final exams or quizzes. Check LMS announcements and complete within the designated periods.

They refer to the same program. HOPE is the official name; depending on semester, you may also see HISS Online (summer) or HIWS Online (winter).

• Exchange: Nominated by home university to study on campus at Hanyang under a partnership.
• Visiting (Free Mover): Apply independently to study on campus; fee-paying with exclusive benefits.
• HOPE: Tuition-free online short-term courses taken remotely from your home country.

Exchange/Visiting students can take online courses, but the registration system differs. Do not apply through the HOPE site—use the designated registration page from the newsletter.

Student IDs are generated after the application period ends and will be sent via newsletter. Not seeing an ID during the application period is normal.

Refer to the Online Course Guide emailed to you. Use Chrome. Turn off auto-translate extensions which may break pages.

Follow the Online Course Guide. If issues persist, email hyuhope@hanyang.ac.kr with your name and student ID.

Via the HY-in Portal or LMS. Read the guide first.

Try Chrome and disable interfering extensions. If it continues, send a screenshot to hyuhope@hanyang.ac.kr. IT support may take time.

There is no formal add/drop period. Review the syllabus and sample videos carefully before applying. If you wish to change right after the semester starts, email hyuhope@hanyang.ac.kr with your student ID, name, and request details. We’ll review depending on timing.

Dropping after the semester begins is not possible. Stopping attendance results in an F. You may choose not to transfer the credits.

Attending less than two-thirds of lectures results in an F. Grades consider attendance, assignments, and quizzes. Not transferring credit won’t affect your home university record.

Within 4 weeks after the semester ends, for students who respond to the transcript request form in the newsletter.

Credit transfer depends on your home institution’s policy. Contact your university directly.
